Drug Harm Reduction
SCOT-PEP promotes health and dignity in all aspects of sex work and therefore Drug Harm Reduction is a fundamental part of our ethos.
Drug Harm Reduction is based on the knowledge that some people may do things which cause harm to themselves or others and either do not want or are unable to stop. Our policy is to offer support to reduce the risk of harm to the individual and therefore the public.
There are three ways in which we try to achieve Drug Harm Reduction.
Firstly we operate a needle exchange from our Mobile Unit and issue clean needles to sex workers and their partners which will reduce the risk of sharing. All staff and volunteers who operate the needle exchange have had needle exchange and safer injecting training and are comfortable in discussing issues and questions that drug users might have.
We also have a member of staff who has the responsibility within the team for Drug Harm Reduction. It is her job to ensure we have appropriate educational materials and harm reduction resources for all drug users (recreational, dependent and injecting), to listen to service users' needs in relation to drugs, and to implement changes according to those needs.
Finally we are fortunate in having secured one night a week joint working with

utreach
N
etwork. A NEON worker is on our mobile unit on a Thursday night and provide specialist support and information to service users who have drug related issues. This has proved to be an invaluable part of the service we provide to injecting drug users - good information and advice is a sure way of reducing harm.
